Why Version Control Exists ?? : The Pen drive Problem

Let’s go back in time to 2005 and consider 2 SDE’s, Hitesh sir and Piyush sir, working in Linux kernel team and were building some section of Linux Kernel(brain of the Linux), Piyush sir was assigned to build the some section of Linux Kernel, he built it with lot of bugs, but he was not that great with debugging so, he copies his entire code and passes on to Hitesh sir in a pen drive to debug it and help him, then Hitesh sir plugs in that pen drive and debugs it thoroughly.

Later on, after debugging, he passes that same pen drive back to Piyush sir. After some time, Piyush sir gets the task of implementing one more feature, but even it had lot of bugs so, Piyush sir passes the same pen drive to debug back to Hitesh sir. This cycle of implementing, debugging and passing goes on. But later on they got introduced to a VCS(version control system) called as Bit keeper. Soon after sometime of it’s usage, it’s license got expired, now their boss Linux Torvalds instead of buying the license once again, he build something of his own VCS called as Git.

Here we took example of only 2 SDE’s, think of big IT firm, where there thousands of employee are working on a same project, do you think, passing on pen drive will a job of ease ?? Think of another difficulty, where two developers are on two different corners of the world, sharing pen drive between them would be easy job?? No, right. That is where VCS comes into work !!

What is Git ??

• It is a version control system.

• It keeps track of your changes in code.

• It helps to manage and share your code.

• Collaboration between developers becomes easy.

Git locally runs on your computer, and it can connected to online service platforms like GitHub, GitLab, to share your code. Git is open source software, Github was acquired by Microsoft in the year 2018.
